Write a Resume

How write a resume and what is the purpose of writing an effective resume are the two important questions that every job seeker should know. Basically, there is no particular format for drafting a resume, but it is necessary to highlight the essential features of the resume in a proper and effective manner. Types of resumes

There are two types of resume, chronological resume and functional resume. A chronological resume is one that contains the detailed information about your professional experience, educational qualifications, contact details and personal details in a chronological order. In short, it showcases all your details in a precise manner. This type of resume is used by fresher’s, who apply for the job after completing their professional studies/courses. People with some experience generally use the reverse chronological resume format, wherein they mention all their credentials in a reverse chronological order. As discussed, another type of resume is the functional resume. This type highlights the professional career (present and past experience) along with the skill set and qualities that you possess. This type of resume format is generally used by the job hoppers, housewives or people who have some gap in their work experience and wish to hide it. There are some more types of resumes such as combination resume (a combination of both functional and chronological resume i.e. candidates full history as along with highlighting the essential features of the resume); targeted resume (a customized resume highlighting the essential aspect such as present and past experience, skill set and other important details, if asked); and mini resume (a brief and precise summary of the resume with specific qualifications, excellent knowledge of the domain and skill set).

Content of a resume

Resume writing is divided into several sections, namely:

  • Contact information: The contact information includes the name of the applicant, their permanent/temporary address, telephone number and email-id. This is one of the important sections of the resume, as this is the only possible way, the recruiter can contact you for scheduling further rounds of interview or for any further discussions.
  • Career objective: The objective of the resume includes the main aim of drafting the resume i.e. the type of job that you are applying for. You can also explain the tenure of your professional career i.e. the total number of years working as a professional. This section should be appealing to the eyes of the recruiter, as the recruiter can get an overall idea about your approach towards this professional field.
  • Professional skills and core competences: This section indicates the skill set (professional, technical and non-technical) that you have gained from present and previous organizations. The applicant can also mention the strength and the qualities that they possess. Make sure that you have valid points to defend your core competencies, if asked during the personal interview.
  • Educational Qualifications: This section includes the name of the course/degree, university from which you attained it, the year of passing, the duration of the course and the type of the course i.e. full-time or part-time. The applicant should also mention other courses details such as any certification or diploma courses, if they possess, as it has an added advantage to their profile. Make sure that you mention these details in reverse chronological order i.e. starting from the latest till the first. This section is very important for the fresher, since they do not possess any sort of experience of the corporate world. Do remember to mention the project details (in-house as well as internship) in your resume.
  • Professional experience: This section summarizes the working history of the applicant in reverse chronological order, when using the chronological resume format for expressing your credentials. It includes the designation of the candidate, name of the organization, tenure of the work and the job description in brief. This job description showcases the duties and responsibilities of the applicant that they undertook while performing the job. You can also mention a short professional summary at the beginning of this section, followed by the other details.
  • Extra-activities: Extra-activities include participating in sports, cultural events, organizing seminars, representing the organization, or any other kind of activities that you perform in and out of the organization, as assigned to you. In other words, you can mention those extra responsibilities that you took in the organization, which were not the part of your job.
  • Achievements: Achievements include the awards and prizes that you receive from the organization when you have excelled in the work assigned to you. It also includes the prizes that you receive after participating in any of the events during your school or college days.
  • Area of Interest: This section is related to your interests in any of the related field of your job or work profile.
  • Reference: Reference acts as a booster in getting a call for the interview from the employers from any of the reputed organization. This section includes the name of the referral, their designation, name of the organization in which they are in, email-id and contact number of the referral.
  • Personal details: This is the last section of the resume. This section includes applicant’s date of birth, social security number, license number, citizenship and marital status.
